My Ritalin Journey – Part 1
I want to share my journey to Ritalin. Two weeks ago, I decided to give it a try and I am not sure what that means for me.
In the session with my therapist two weeks ago, I happened to flippantly throw out the words, ‘my undiagnosed ADHD’. She paused me. I had never used this term even once in the last two years of seeing her. She suggests that I give Ritalin a try.
By that evening I had the pale blue and white box with the neat black typeface next to my bed.
Sixteen years ago it seemed like a catch-all acronym or even a scapegoat for teachers who couldn’t teach the child. I believe it is still wildly misunderstood.
In the work that I do I don’t look for a diagnosis, I look for the child’s communication, for their language. The child who isn’t putting his attention on a task in front of him has a story to tell, not just a label to share.
To tell the story of all of these children, I must tell mine first. I want to own my experience in a way that makes room for everyone to own theirs too, including the children we teach.
